Meals on Wheels of the Salinas Valley

Mission

Meals on Wheels of the Salinas Valley believes no senior should go hungry or face isolation. For more than 53 years, we've been serving MORE than A MEAL by Delivering Meals, Nurturing Hearts and Nourishing Homebound Seniors.

The Big Idea

We believe that no senior should go hungry or be lonely. That's why we bring nutritious meals and a wellness check to homebound seniors, 60 and older, who can no longer shop or cook for themselves.

We've expanded our services to our senior community members. We DELIVER MORE than a MEAL by:

-Continuing our award-winning monthly SOCIALS (SOCOS/NOCOS/SASSO) in Castroville, Greenfield, King City, Salinas and Soledad. We provide seniors in these rural, underserved communities with senior resources, a culturally appropriate fresh lunch, a box of fresh fruits & veggies and essential socialization. We serve over 500 seniors at these monthly events
-Holding 2 congregate meal sites in south county
-Providing pet food to the furry friends of our clients in collaboration with SPCA
-Collaborating with Food Bank to deliver fresh fruits and vegetables to our homebound senior clients
-Offering free books and books on tape from Monterey County Free Library

How does your organization benefit Monterey County?

We play a vital role in supporting community health and well-being by providing nutritious meals, fostering essential social connections and helping individuals maintain their independence. This is important for seniors who may otherwise need to move to assisted living facilities which are costly. Our service allows them to stay in their homes and in familiar surroundings.

We are integrated into the local community, often relying on volunteers from the area. This helps to strengthen community ties but also gives volunteers a sense of purpose and connection.

Delivering nutritious meals ensures this vulnerable population receives healthy meals which is crucial for their health and preventing malnutrition. Volunteers deliver meals and companionship which can reduce isolation and loneliness.

Our impact is wide. We cover approximately 1600 square miles of Monterey County, serving seniors from San Ardo in south county to Los Lomas in north county and everyone in between, including Salinas.

My dad is going to Hospice soon, so I'd like to thank everyone, especially the volunteers for taking the time to deliver meals to my dad during this time. Thank you so much for your help. We are so grateful.
