Fund for Independent Journalism in Monterey County

Mission

Dedicated to promoting independent journalism through investigative and enterprise reporting, free speech initiatives, story-sharing projects, and diversity programs — to help strengthen the essential mission of Monterey County's local and independent newsmedia.

The Big Idea

Journalism is in transition throughout the US with half of newsrooms jobs eliminated in the past decade. Meanwhile journalists are working harder than ever to keep up with the increased demand for reliable, well researched and reported news coverage —all while the local economy that funds the work is under siege. The Fund for Independent Journalism In Monterey County (FIJ) is a new project established between Monterey County Weekly with the national Alternative Newsweekly Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)3. FIJ intends to raise funds to support 2021 stories to appear in Monterey County Weekly and Monterey County NOW, reporting on the local economic impacts from the pandemic, government transparency and accountability, affordable housing and transportation issues, social justice and policing.

Our community desperately needs you. Talk about essential service! Thanks for being there to shine a clear light on issues that matter.

We’re In This Together

Nonprofits are more important that ever in this trying time. Monterey County Gives! was created to support the local nonprofit community's Big Ideas (and programs). And thanks to your participation and generosity, Monterey County Gives! raised over $5.3 million for 163 local nonprofits in 2019.

MCGives! has now raised and contributed over $27 million dollars since its inception ten years ago. That’s astounding. And wonderful. Thank you to all our Partners, Sponsors, nonprofit Board Directors, staff and volunteers — and each of our 4,902 donors. We did it, together.

The 2020 Campaign begins November 12.
