We build strong, collaborative relationships to fuel a diverse, inclusive community committed to lifelong learning.
The Big Idea
Bay View Academy is a public charter school providing rich and interactive learning opportunities that extend beyond state standards to produce creative, independent thinkers. Serving about 500 multicultural and economically diverse students, the school benefits Monterey, Seaside, Salinas, Pacific Grove and Marina by building strong, collaborative relationships to fuel an inclusive community. The world has recently been forced to take a hard look at societal systems through the lens of social justice, and we are at a turning point in history with positive changes being made around the world. With two full-time counselors, social-emotional learning coordinators, part-time curriculum coaches and curriculum writing institute, Bay View’s social
justice program is preparing children to participate in conversations and be actively involved in their communities, creating a better future for all.
If the goal of social justice is to bring about equity for all, Bay View Academy is working hard at the practice of such every day. Not only do the staff uplift and support the students by meeting them where they are, they encourage the students to do the same both at the school and in the community at large. We are going into our fifth year as a BVA family and every year I have seen them become more committed to equity. The children have learned to call out inequitable situations with their passion projects and committed themselves to finding solutions to problems from bullying to homelessness in our community. My favorite moment was when my children and I attended a Black Lives Matter protest and we saw Bay View families, staff, board members and administration, out there with us. Seeing the values of our school in action was a bright moment for myself and my kids!
