Carmel High School Foundation

Mission

Advancing educational opportunities for Carmel Unified School District high school students by raising funds for scholarships, special academic programs, and other unmet student needs.

The Big Idea

In 2018, the Carmel High School Foundation established the Ron Stoney Educational Pathways Program (RSEPP). Dr. Stoney is the founder of the CHSF, and the inspiration and impetus for the RSEPP. In 1950, Dr. Stoney's CHS biology teacher recognized his potential and arranged for him to intern at the Hopkins Marine Station. This internship ignited a passion for biology and ultimately a pathway to a career in medicine.

The purpose of the Ron Stoney Educational Pathways Program (RSEPP) is to create similar pathways to success for those students who might not otherwise have access to the same level of life changing opportunities outside of the classroom. While the perception is Carmel is an affluent area with no need for assistance, the reality is 17 percent of CUSD students participate in free or reduced lunch (low-income) and 15 percent are non-native English speakers. In addition, the higher cost of living in Carmel makes providing educational opportunities outside of the classroom impossible for families with even an above average income.

Funding life changing educational and cultural opportunities meets an important need that is currently not being addressed by the schools.

"My experience this summer was absolutely incredible. I was accepted into the California College of Art summer pre-college program in illustration. I spent 7 hours a day in class doing doing something I love and improving my art skills. While my art classes at Carmel High School give me a place to produce a volume of work, the level of instruction I received at CCA was unparalleled by anything I have experience in high school. The teachers and students I met were such interesting and absolutely inspiring people. The program was an incredibly enriching experience and I can definitely see myself continuing to improve my drawings and illustrations in order to reach the skill level required to have a successful career in the arts. I would never have been able to attend CCA and pursue my dreams without the financial assistance of the Ron Stoney Pathways Program."
