Carmel Valley Community Youth Center (CVCYC)

Mission

The specific and primary purposes of this corporation are to provide, promote, construct, maintain, and operate premises, facilities, structures, and equipment in Carmel Valley, California, to be used for the education of youth in connection with athletic, social, recreational, cultural, and civic matters, and the promotion of such activities among the youth of Carmel Valley.

The Big Idea

The Carmel Valley Community Youth Center (CVCYC) has partnered with the Tatum's Garden Foundation to create Tatum’s Treehouse—a fully accessible playground in Carmel Valley that opened in December 2024. This is only the second fully inclusive playground in Monterey County. Built through an all-volunteer model, the project brought together community members and families to create a space that reflects our shared values of inclusion and connection.

Modeled after Tatum’s Garden in Salinas, Tatum’s Treehouse provides safe, meaningful play opportunities for children of all abilities from across Monterey County and beyond. While CVCYC has long been home to a playground, it was outdated and in need of a complete redesign. This project transforms the previous aging structure into a vibrant, accessible destination where every child feels welcome.

Together, CVCYC and the Tatum's Garden Foundation are committed to ensuring that play is for everyone—now and for generations to come.

How does your organization benefit Monterey County?

Our organization endeavors to benefit all of Monterey County. Tatum's Treehouse is free and open to all who visit. The playground is located alongside Tularcitos Elementary School in Carmel Valley but people from all over Monterey County can be found enjoying the sun while playing. In addition, our organization operates a Hall and pool. The pool is open to all Monterey County residents for a daily fee but no required membership. At our pool, we also provide water safety instruction, swim team, and family swim. Our Hall serves as a vibrant gathering space, hosting summer camps, Girl Scout meetings, weddings, and other community events. Together, these facilities and programs foster inclusion, connection, and wellness for the entire county.

I love Tatum's Treehouse! It’s inclusive and all kids can play. I love that every time I walk by, I hear laughter and see people having fun. My favorite part is the swings.
