College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at California State University Monterey Bay

Mission

The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences empowers students to critically examine their place in the world: to imagine, to communicate, to collaborate, to create, and to transform. Our graduates are engaged global citizens ready for the realities of the 21st century. They apply values, interdisciplinary knowledge and skills to provide creative and socially responsible solutions for the future.

The Big Idea

The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences delivers a wide range of arts and lectures programming. These events include guest artists and notable speakers, as well as our renowned faculty. A stable college fund would allow us to commit to an annual events calendar and effectively share our events with the broader community. Examples of our annual events include Dia de los Muertos, Visiting Artist Series, Site Specific Art Exhibition, Heritage Music Festival, Sundance Shorts with Mike Plante, Social Justice Colloquium, and Writers from the Edge. Guests for these events have included Viet Than Nguyen, Zeynep Tufekci, Carrie Mae Weems, and Rafa Esparza. This would be the first year of asking for an overarching fund to support these events and would begin to build a reliable calendar and expectation to engage our vibrance as a community serving college.

The Dia de Los Muertos ceremony and the sugar skull workshop class is important in that it has become a legacy for the Visual & Public Art Department that we share with everyone across campus and in our community. Through the class and the workshops and the building of the altar, we reminisce about family and friends who have passed on, it's a time of celebration of their lives. It's so amazing to see people from different ethnicities come together to celebrate, sharing knowledge and learning about our tradition as we come together to have a great time.
