Dance Kids of Monterey County

Dance Kids of Monterey County was created to provide ongoing performance opportunities in dance the theater arts to the youth of Monterey County. Our mission is to strengthen character and positively influence children’s lives through the performing arts.

The Big Idea

Dance Kids will produce The Legend of the Snowy Plover ballet as an environmental statement in support of this wildlife species and its continued peaceful existence in the dunes of Sand City.

Dance Kids of Monterey County shines a light on our coastal Snowy Plover’s endangered existence in the dunes of Sand City, through a new ballet, The Legend of the Snowy Plover. Our story follows Kentish Plover, the last of his kind, and his risk and adventure to retrieve a magical violin stolen by the evil emperor and restore happiness to the land.

The performance piece includes original music, libretto and choreography, and will be produced using a relatively new concept called silent theatre techniques, allowing varied performance venues to create solutions overcoming bans on amplification and loudspeakers in public areas with sound ordinances. The varied venues will incorporate the principles behind a silent disco, rave or theatre; an event where people dance to music or view traditional dance and theatre by listening on wireless headphones.
Rather than using a speaker system, music is broadcast via a radio transmitter with the signal being picked up by wireless headphone receivers worn by the participants, including the dancers. Those without the headphones hear no music, giving the effect of a stage full of people dancing to nothing.

My god daughter began performing with Dance Kids when she was three years old. She had such a positive experience, that she continued to dance until she went off to college as a dance major.

Dance Kids, and all of its amazing teachers, were the most positive experience for my god daughter. She gained self-confidence, through her love of dance as well as personal discipline, personal responsibility and how to interact and work together to be able to provide a beautiful performance for the audience.

Dance Kids nurturing and guidance helped my god daughter through her parent’s divorce and the emotional pain that every child feels with such a difficult ordeal.

My god daughter now 25, lives independently in Los Angeles and is a doctoral student. I strongly believe Dance Kids played a huge part of her development in becoming the the amazing woman she is today.
