Youth Orchestra Salinas

Mission

Our mission is to transform the lives of our youth and our communities through the inspiration, discipline, and performance of classical and orchestral music.

The Big Idea

The Youth Orchestra of Salinas (YOSAL) serves the most vulnerable community in Salinas. They offer a youth development program through which music education and performance build confidence, discipline and life skills for low-income, at-risk kids. Knowing that they are the future leaders of our community, students are taught to have high expectations of themselves and their peers, and to strive for excellence in all that they do in a disciplined musical training program. The power of music to bring people together has not gone away during the pandemic, but their ability to actually get together is limited for now. YOSAL created the Salinas Summer Symphony to offer virtual community concerts, allowing students the chance to perform as a group while they are unable to meet in person, and also inviting other Salinas community members to partake.

YOSAL is a place where you don’t have to be afraid to be yourself, and you get to meet new friends while learning music in a fun and educational way. Every year YOSAL creates cool events for us to be involved in and we get to perform in front of a crowd. Even though it may make you nervous, the feeling of everyone applauding and smiling at you makes you confident. Also, YOSAL is not all about music; sometimes we go on fun field trips, too. I’m proud to say that I am part of YOSAL.

We’re In This Together

Nonprofits are more important that ever in this trying time. Monterey County Gives! was created to support the local nonprofit community's Big Ideas (and programs). And thanks to your participation and generosity, Monterey County Gives! raised over $5.3 million for 163 local nonprofits in 2019.

MCGives! has now raised and contributed over $27 million dollars since its inception ten years ago. That’s astounding. And wonderful. Thank you to all our Partners, Sponsors, nonprofit Board Directors, staff and volunteers — and each of our 4,902 donors. We did it, together.

The 2020 Campaign begins November 12.
