The Service Learning Institute fosters and promotes social justice by connecting students, faculty, and staff with the surrounding tri-county community.
Every CSUMB student serves in the community while learning about social justice, diversity and civic responsibility. Service Learning student leaders are peer educators who share a passion for community work with their peers in the classroom and in the community. With recent changes in national policies that affect poor people and immigrants, the student leaders have been addressing unforeseen needs that have arisen in the community by developing action projects, adding to this award-winning service learning model. These are projects that will be developed with partners, designed to include service learners, and serve a community-identified need.
Since [a Service Learning student] is helping in our site, I have noticed the fantastic recruitment of service learners for our citizenship project. Her work placing and supervising service learners with our citizenship students has been a positive impact in classes. This fall we helped 40 students to become citizens of the United States.
