Friends of the Monterey Public Library

Mission

The Friends of the Monterey Public Library are fund-raisers and friend-raisers for the Monterey Public Library - California's first public library, voted the Best Library in Monterey County by Monterey County Weekly readers in 2019, for the eleventh year in a row. The Friends raise funds for library programs and collections in response to community need, and promote library services and programs throughout the community.

The Big Idea

The Monterey Public Library is a hub of learning and exploration, where staff engage youth year round, even while school is out; their free summer reading programs are wildly successful. The programs build early literacy skills through storytimes filled with songs and play; facilitate family bonding and school readiness; instill a love of learning; and engage middle and high school students in book discussions, fan culture celebrations and leadership opportunities. The Library’s Big Idea is in support of Build a Strong Community: A Year of Active Learning for Children and Teens, engaging youth and families in activities that spark the imagination, foster creativity and build success in school and life.

 Libraries are a genius idea.

We Did It, Together!

Monterey County Gives! was created to support the local nonprofit community's Big Ideas (and programs). And thanks to your participation and generosity, Monterey County Gives! raised over $5.3 million for 163 local nonprofits in 2019.

MCGives! has now raised and contributed over $27 million dollars since its inception ten years ago. That’s astounding. And wonderful.

Look for the 2020 Monterey County Gives! RFP (for applying nonprofits) in the Monterey County Weekly this June/July. Monterey County Gives! 2020 campaign kicks off in early November.

Thank you to all our Partners, Sponsors, nonprofit Board Directors, staff and volunteers — and each of our 4,902 donors. We did it, together.
