Friends of the Monterey Public Library

Mission

The Friends of the Monterey Public Library are fund-raisers and friend-raisers for the Monterey Public Library – California’s first public library – voted the Best Library in Monterey County by Monterey County Weekly readers in 2017, for the ninth year in a row. The Friends raise funds for library collections and programs in response to community need, and promote library services and programs throughout the community.

The Big Idea

Monterey Public Library helps children in our community maintain and improve their reading skills through incentives and free, active learning all summer long.

Children who read 2-3 hours per week over the summer score higher in reading and math when they return to school. That’s what the research shows. Summer Reading 2018 with Monterey Public Library provides reading incentives and free active learning opportunities over the summer. We need your help to provide books and reading-rich programs to keep children’s minds active and engaged while they are out of school. This year’s theme, “Reading Takes You Everywhere!” celebrates the excitement of exploration and new discoveries to be found in books, libraries, our communities, and beyond. Through art, creative play, science and technology, Monterey Public Library’s Summer Reading Program will lead our community’s kids to new discoveries and fresh perspectives. Summer Reading is free and open to everyone.

The Library is an awesome place!
