The Friends of the Salinas Public Library is a community based membership organization dedicated to supporting and promoting the Salinas Public Libraries through programs, advocacy, and financial support. We raise money through our Online Book Accounts, our Corner Bookshop at John Steinbeck Library, sales at El Gabilan and Cesar Chavez Libraries, our six Yearly Big Book Sales at our Book Depot in Heritage Park and our Sip & Paint Event (we also receive some grant support). We donate books to five Little Libraries in Salinas parks, four Rehab Centers, three Retirement Homes and our Depot for sales.
Our Big Idea is to support the library as it gives access to families across Salinas in these programs. The BABY (Books At Birth Year) Program gives 6 age appropriate books to Salinas babies in their first year. The Summer Reading Program rewards students for daily reading in the summer. Families for Literacy teaches parents the skills needed to promote reading school readiness, and lifelong learning for the entire family. The Kinder Mobile issues library cards to all Kindergarten students and makes monthly bookmobile visits to schools so children may check out books throughout the school year. For all these programs we need books, books, books!.
At Cesar Chavez, Damian S. age 7, was playing a word association game. He was given the word "library". His word-association response was "heaven!" He thinks the library is heaven!
