The Foundation seeks to leave a thriving Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS) to future generations by protecting habitats and wildlife, advancing scientific understanding of the Sanctuary and inspiring the public to be its stewards. The Foundation envisions a healthy MBNMS recognized as a national treasure for its unique, abundant biodiversity and widespread community support.
The Big Idea
During these uncertain times, people from all over the state are flocking to Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS) to find solace, inspiration, beauty and life. The Foundation is the chief advocate and supporter of the stretch of ocean known as the “Serengeti of the Sea,” supporting a diversity of marine life found nowhere else in the world. The MBMNS Foundation funds
the ocean heroes who find and free whales that are trapped in nets and ocean debris. Sanctuary docents educate visitors on how
to appreciate wildlife without risking their own safety or the lives of vulnerable animals. The foundation’s programs to prevent wildlife disturbances are chronically underfunded, yet vitally important.
As a fisherman, surfer, and ocean lover, I am incredibly grateful for the diverse ecosystems and wildlife that exist offshore in Monterey Bay. Throughout this pandemic, the ocean has been incredibly important to my personal wellbeing and to the wellbeing of the greater Monterey community. We are lucky to have a coastline protected within Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, and I hope that we will continue to protect this special place into the future.
