Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Foundation

Mission

Our mission is to leave a thriving Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary to future generations by protecting wildlife habitats, raising visibility and awareness, fostering education and engagement, and inspiring the public to be its stewards.

The Big Idea

Right now, our Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is facing significant threats.

From increased ship traffic and rising ocean temperatures to plastic pollution and shifting national priorities, the need for strong community support has never been more urgent. With uncertain funding and staffing, the future of this incredible place can no longer be taken for granted.

Now more than ever, it’s up to us—our communities, our educators, our donors, and all ocean lovers—to protect the sanctuary and ensure it remains a thriving, resilient ecosystem for future generations.

The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, chaired by former U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, is the nonprofit partner and chief advocate for this extraordinary place. We fund programs like marine conservation education for underserved students, whale protection efforts, college internships, marine debris removal, and public outreach.

With your support, we can meet this moment with action and purpose.

How does your organization benefit Monterey County?

For the four million annual visitors to Cannery Row, the health and beauty of Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is priceless. We simply would not have the vibrant economy and visitor experience we currently enjoy were it not for a clean and accessible marine environment. The hotels, restaurants, shops, and other vendors along Cannery Row understand and appreciate this connection.

A clean, thriving ocean benefits all Monterey County residents and visitors—providing aesthetic, environmental, economic, and emotional advantages. The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Foundation helps keep our coastal community clean, healthy, and thriving through:

Educational Programs – K‑6 field trips for Salinas students, often their first ocean experience.

Wildlife Protection – Team OCEAN and Bay Net docents safeguarding wildlife along the coast.

Community Engagement – Events at iconic venues like the Tehama Clubhouse and Sardine Factory.

Public Education – Programs like Whalefest Monterey inspiring ocean stewardship.
