Monterey Peninsula College Foundation creates opportunities for students and
enhances the learning environment at MPC by fundraising and friend raising.
The philosophy that "education is the means by which people may reach
their full potential" drives the Foundation's enrichment programs and
commitment to student success.
The Big Idea
The MPC Foundation provides opportunities
for students to attend college, exposing many to a world they didn’t know was
possible. Students with college-going potential who live in challenging
environments often encounter financial barriers and a lack of encouragement,
causing them to miss out on pursuing a higher education. The MPC Foundation’s
College Incentive Program provides a support network that encourages students
to enroll in college and stay on track through academic counseling, personal
mentoring and scholarships. The program is based on the theory that a college
education leads to better employment options and breaks the cycle of poverty
for young adults from disadvantaged backgrounds. The foundation also provides
textbook and emergency financial assistance to students experiencing
hardships that threaten their ability to remain in school.
I am a first-generation college student
majoring in theater and psychology. I left an abusive home, suffering from
PTSD and other health issues, unsure of my future. Coming to MPC has been one
of the best opportunities for me. I go to school full time, work as an
ambassador for MPC, and volunteer. Receiving scholarships through the
foundation has allowed me to continue my education at MPC and stay in a town
I now consider home. I was awarded four scholarships this fall. To me it
showed that not only was I doing well, but other people recognized that in me
and wanted to see me succeed.
