New Canon Theatre Co.

Mission

New Canon Theatre Company’s mission is to stage daring, community-driven professional reimaginings of classical and contemporary works, while also championing new plays by both established and emerging voices.

The Big Idea

After three years of producing bold, community-rooted professional theatre across Monterey County, New Canon Theatre Co. is ready for its next act: building the infrastructure to sustain and grow our work.

This year’s MC Gives! campaign focuses on expanding our year-round capacity by growing our core team. We’re investing in the future by hiring a Development Director and Technical Director and supporting our executive staff—who have largely volunteered their time since New Canon’s founding. We’re also increasing production budgets to continue creating high-quality theatre while offering better pay to the local artists, designers, and technicians who make it possible.

These investments are essential to strengthening our organization, expanding access through education and outreach, and deepening community partnerships. They also lay the foundation for our search for a permanent home—one rooted in and responsive to our community.

With your support, you can help New Canon grow and thrive in Monterey County.

How does your organization benefit Monterey County?

New Canon Theatre Co. enriches Monterey County by producing bold, inclusive, and high-quality theatrical experiences that reflecting our entire region. We tell stories by and for historically underrepresented voices, alongside fresh, thought-provoking retellings of classic works—designed to challenge, inspire, and connect. Our performance venues span across the Monterey County, and we’re proud to have welcomed students from Salinas, Seaside, Marina, and beyond to attend free productions paired with artist-led workshops. As we grow, we’re developing plans for touring productions and school partnerships that will bring professional theatre to classrooms across Monterey County—including North and South County—ensuring equitable access to the arts regardless of geography or income. At the same time, we continue to invest in the local creative economy by providing fair pay and professional opportunities to artists, designers, and technicians. This campaign strengthens the foundation for all of that work—allowing us to serve more students, artists, and audiences year-round.

I'm incredibly grateful to New Canon Theatre Co. for the opportunities they've provided to Monterey County theatre students. From free access to professional productions like "An Iliad" at Monterey’s First Theatre to hands-on workshops with theatre professionals, these experiences have been inspiring and transformative. Their commitment to arts education has had a lasting impact on our students, and we truly value this partnership. Alicia Welch, Monterey High Theatre Instructor /MPC Theatre Instructor
