New Canon Theatre Company’s mission is to stage daring re-imaginings of the classical and contemporary canons, as well as producing new works by established and emerging playwrights.
In 2025, New Canon seeks production funding to expand beyond our summer programming. We selected five titles which will build on our mission of staging compelling, diverse, and engaging theatre while launching educational initiatives, creating jobs in the arts, and creating more opportunities for artistic outreach in Monterey County. In the spring, we will be presenting An Iliad, a solo-retelling of Homer’s poem about the Trojan War, touring county schools before a residency in Monterey. Summer brings Shakespeare’s Othello in repertory with Life Sucks, a contemporary adaptation of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya . In the fall, we present Appropriate (Best Play Revival at the 2024 Tony Awards), in addition to a solo staging of The Mahabharata, created by and starring a South Asian creative team from the Bay Area, also to tour schools. Additionally, we wish to offer more “pay what you can performances,” eliminating financial barriers for audience members.
New Canon Theatre Co. swiftly elevated our local theatre scene with their bold productions. From the immersive "Shakespeare in the Vines" at local wineries and intimate speakeasy setting of "Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill" at Sunset Center’s Studio 105, to the premiere of "Finding Chase" showcasing local and Broadway talents, each performance has pushed artistic boundaries. Critics and theatergoers alike have lauded New Canon for its daring and creativity. Known for their commitment to fair wages for artists, the company both elevates the quality of productions and supports the local arts economy. Though their ambitious and professional productions come at a higher cost, the investment in talent has raised the standard of theatrical excellence in Monterey County. New Canon Theatre Co. enriches our community, deserving both attention and support to continue their transformative work in local theatre.
