Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

Mission

The mission of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, an educational program for adults 50 and better, is to offer fresh, stimulating courses that challenge the mind. We serve lifelong learners who are eager to explore traditional and new areas of knowledge – without exams and grades.

The Big Idea

To expand the opportunities for those 50 and over to learn in a relaxed, informal atmosphere where knowledge is shared, ideas sparked, new thinking inspired and friendships forged.

OLLI offers ways for people 50 and over to continue their quest for lifelong learning with cultural, social and intellectual experiences that allow them to grow and learn. The continuing education that OLLI provides is not skill-based, like learning a language. Instead, students delve into university-level subjects they may have been interested in for years but didn’t have the time or opportunity to pursue. Classes are taught by university faculty and community-based experts.

Our goal is to work with like-minded organizations. We partner with – not compete with – other groups to bring educational opportunities to local residents. Among the organizations we currently collaborate with are the Center for Photographic Art, the Gentrain Society and the World Affairs Council, and we would like to work with other groups to offer more courses and activities. We’re also working to bring courses to people who can’t come to us.

The OLLI program is a gift – a remarkable and wonderful gift. In every course I have taken, I have observed excitement and a sense of wonder from those who are teaching the classes as well as those who are taking them. I have been struck by the classroom chemistry and energized by the peer-to-peer learning fostered in these classes. This program has offered me opportunities to reflect and grow in ways that I had never imagined.
