Osio Theater is formed to promote and support the cinematic arts by exhibiting independent, art, foreign, alternative and classic films in a theater located in historic downtown Monterey; to provide educational programs with respect to the art of filmmaking; and to support the arts in the greater Monterey Peninsula area.
Osio Theater’s after-school filmmaking courses will teach middle school students throughout Monterey County the basics of storytelling, filmmaking and presentation. The nonprofit movie theater aims to inspire appreciation of the arts in students, particularly supporting underserved school sites that do not have regular access to arts programming. Osio needs support funding equipment as part of its student microbudget filmmaking program so students will be empowered to tell their stories using readily available technology, such as tablets and smartphones. They will be encouraged to take artistic risks, build social skills and engage as members of their community.
Every child needs an opportunity to tell their story, to develop a story, and to share with others. But this particular kind of immersion into this particular kind of storytelling gives them a really huge platform to bring it all together—all these different skills and these different ideas—and then gives them an opportunity to think about what story they want to tell and how to do it really well.
