The mission of Power Over Parkinson’s is to enhance the lives of those in our community affected by Parkinson’s Disease by providing access to exercise programs that have been scientifically proven to slow disease progression.
The absence of a Parkinson’s-specific program in the local community inspired the formation of Power Over Parkinson’s (POP) to create and support a class curriculum utilizing research-based practices to help those affected by Parkinson’s disease (PD) manage symptoms. Founded to support families on their PD journey, the mission is rooted in building relationships and providing a movement and educational curriculum focused on quality-of-life improvement.
POP classes are available to individuals diagnosed with PD, and are held weekly (M – SA) at the POP Studio in Monterey. Classes are tailored to meet each person’s specific level of disease progression. POP recognizes that a big part of the PD journey is supporting the people who care for individuals with PD so all classes are open to care partners as well. Classes are conducted by instructors professionally certified in exercise and experienced in working with movement disorders.
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the fastest growing neurological disease in the world. Recent data estimates that nearly 90,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed annually which represents a 50% increase from the previous estimate of 60,000 per year.
The absence of a Parkinson’s-specific program in the local community inspired the formation of Power Over Parkinson’s (POP) to create and support a program utilizing research-based practices to help those affected by PD manage symptoms in an environment that embraces empowerment, motivation and social interaction. The program is open to any individual with PD and classes are tailored to meet each person’s level of Parkinson’s. Care partners are also encouraged to participate in the classes.
The POP program addresses a need to provide support to an underserved predominantly senior population and is vital for the local PD community in their pursuit of disease management and sustainability of quality of life.
