Diversity Center

Mission

The Diversity Center inspires and advocates for the LGBTQ+ people of Santa Cruz and Monterey counties by providing critical services, spaces, education, and events that enhance our community's well-being, allowing individuals to build resiliency and thrive.

The Big Idea

Founded in 1989, The Diversity Center is a trusted hub for LGBTQ+ health and wellness in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties. We offer free, accessible programs and services that support mental health, foster community connection, and promote equity for people of all ages, backgrounds, and identities. Our work includes LGBTQ+ affirming counseling, cultural competency training for schools and service providers, multigenerational educational and social events, resource navigation, and advocacy for access to gender-affirming care. At a time when LGBTQ+ individuals face increasing mental health challenges, isolation, and political attacks, The Diversity Center provides a safe and affirming space where people can find healing, joy, and belonging. We center the voices and experiences of LGBTQ+ people in everything we do, uplifting our community to build resilience, strengthen self-advocacy, and live authentically. Through these efforts, we are creating a healthier, more connected, and inclusive future for LGBTQ+ people across our region.

How does your organization benefit Monterey County?

The Diversity Center has long been a leader in LGBTQ+ services and advocacy across the Monterey Bay Area. While historically based in Santa Cruz, we have formalized our presence in Monterey County by becoming a contracted Rainbow Connections partner through Monterey County Behavioral Health, a milestone that underscores our growing regional impact. We recently hired two new Regional Program Specialists to deliver Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum, strengthen GSA support in schools, host regional youth activities, provide training for school administrators, and share Family Acceptance Project strategies with parents in Monterey County. We also held our annual youth CampOUT with Big Sur Land Trust this year. Four of our staff members, including our Executive Director, Development Director, and two Program Specialists, reside in Monterey County, deepening our connection and commitment to the communities we serve.

I have experienced a variety of love and support through The Diversity Center, in both its volunteer program and its mental health services. My therapist has given me tools toward self-growth and acceptance, helped me understand the root of my anxieties, talked with me through familial struggles, and provided links to outside support.
