Henry Miller Library

Mission

The Henry Miller Memorial Library/HMML is a public benefit, non-profit organization championing the literary, artistic and cultural contributions of the late writer, artist and Big Sur resident Henry Miller. The Library serves as a significant cultural resource center, functioning as a public gallery, performance and workshop space for artists, writers, musicians and students with free access to the community and visitors 6 days a week. The HMML offers diverse concerts, lectures, book signings and readings, theatrical performances and film screenings, as well as hosting countless community events.
A current Library educational project is “Big Sur Stories”, a collection of audio interviews of local residents and other noteworthy persons that archive and nurture the region’s unique, remarkable natural and cultural history.

The Big Idea

The Henry Miller Memorial Library (HMML) serves as a significant cultural resource center, functioning as a public gallery and a performance and workshop space for artists, writers, musicians and students. The library offers diverse concerts, lectures, book signings and readings, theatrical performances and film screenings, as well as hosting countless community events. A current library educational project, “Big Sur Stories,” delivers a collection of audio interviews with local residents and other noteworthy persons that archive and nurture the region’s unique, remarkable natural and cultural history. The library continues to offer the visiting public a safe place to visit during the pandemic, and intends to continue to provide guest services despite the significant challenge that the current pandemic is posing to all of us.

The Henry Miller Memorial Library plays a unique and invaluable role in Big Sur. The Library has made an indelible impact on the Central Coast through the many ways in which it celebrates and supports arts and community. Attendees at events have the opportunity to appreciate the arts in a welcoming, community-oriented setting in a transcendent landscape. As a volunteer at the library I have often heard visitors say that it is ‘truly a one-of-a-kind place.’ Big Sur’s residents and its many visitors will benefit greatly from the continued vitality of the Library and the way in which it is uniquely positioned to support education and the arts in California and beyond.

We’re In This Together

Nonprofits are more important that ever in this trying time. Monterey County Gives! was created to support the local nonprofit community's Big Ideas (and programs). And thanks to your participation and generosity, Monterey County Gives! raised over $5.3 million for 163 local nonprofits in 2019.

MCGives! has now raised and contributed over $27 million dollars since its inception ten years ago. That’s astounding. And wonderful. Thank you to all our Partners, Sponsors, nonprofit Board Directors, staff and volunteers — and each of our 4,902 donors. We did it, together.

The 2020 Campaign begins November 12.
