To stir curiosity through marine research, education, and a blend of science and art inspired by John Steinbeck, Ed Ricketts, and their journey on the Western Flyer.
Reflecting upon their 1940 expedition to the Gulf of California on the Western Flyer, John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts wrote, "It is advisable to look from the tide pool to the stars and back to the tide pool again.” Today, the Western Flyer Foundation honors this expansive spirit through integrative marine science education on land and aboard the restored vessel. We introduce students to the ocean, conduct innovative research, and inspire an appreciation and respect for Monterey Bay’s unique ecosystems through a distinctive blend of science and art.
I first stepped aboard the Western Flyer with the goal of fostering a community. On our last day, sitting in the same spot on the aft deck, reflecting on our time together, a feeling of deep gratitude for the community–and for the animals, nature, and abundance of life we were surrounded by–washed over me. I walked away with a profound feeling of inspiration and a sense of hope for the future of science, art, and the crossroads at which they meet. I look forward to seeing more of the wonderful work from the individuals that made this possible and the Western Flyer Foundation, as they continue to bring science education to this ocean-loving community and beyond.
