World Affairs Council Monterey Bay

Mission

World Affairs Council of Monterey Bay Area, Inc. is a non-profit, non-partisan organization established to promote the education of the public, raise the standard of public debate, and encourage dialogue on global issues through presentations by thought leaders with diverse opinions, discussion, and study of international affairs.

The Big Idea

The World Affairs Council partners with the Monterey County Office of Education to promote the Academic World Quest (AWQ) competition for Monterey County high schools. Each year, teams of 4 students from local area high schools are invited to compete for cash prizes and the opportunity to represent their high school, county and WACMB during the national AWQ championship weekend in Washington, DC. The student experience is designed to enhance the students’ global awareness and provide an opportunity to meet and engage with approximately 250 like-minded peers from around the United States. This event has a broad impact on the communication and leadership skills for dozens of our area high school students who otherwise have limited opportunities to learn about our interconnected and rapidly changing world.

How does your organization benefit Monterey County?

Our public offerings of lectures, OLLI classes, discussion groups and youth education programs raise the standard of public debate and increase our collective understanding of current world affairs. Our sponsorship of AWQ significantly impacts the lives of participating students, encouraging a global dialogue with their peers and gaining important insights to careers of public service. A newly developed scholarship program for local Monterey County students pursuing post-secondary education in global studies will further support the education of our future leaders.

AWQ was an incredibly rewarding experience that exposed us to eclectic topics surrounding our world today. Our dedication, collaboration, and lighthearted attitude made this event truly delightful. As we advance to the national level, we are determined to excel and represent Monterey County with pride.
