Youth Orchestra Salinas (YOSAL)

Mission

YOSAL's mission is to transform the lives of our youth and our communities through inspiration, discipline and performance of classical ensemble music.

The Big Idea

YOSAL is so much more than a youth orchestra, providing years of safe and inspirational after-school programming for Salinas youth. YOSAL students are dedicated – they attend music lessons up to four times each week and perform twice a year. Some students stay enrolled in YOSAL for more than a decade, building upon their skills. In addition to free music education taught by local professionals, the Big Idea also provides counseling and music therapy to support each young musician’s overall well-being.

Words from a YOSAL parent: During this past year, YOSAL has offered a very valuable opportunity for my two oldest children. YOSAL is impacting their lives in a fundamental way by enriching their knowledge of music and allowing them to learn to play an instrument. The possibility of the students being able to acquire an instrument from YOSAL has been very helpful for my family. It is through YOSAL that my children have developed a love and appreciation for music. Despite the pandemic, YOSAL has made great efforts in providing consistent online music classes. The staff members are extraordinary, very supportive, and go above and beyond to teach and engage the students. My experience with YOSAL has been exceptional and I am extremely thankful for their services.

We’re In This Together

Nonprofits are more important that ever in this trying time. Monterey County Gives! was created to support the local nonprofit community's Big Ideas (and programs). And thanks to your participation and generosity, Monterey County Gives! raised over $7.8 million for 162 local nonprofits in 2020.

MCGives! has now raised and contributed over $35 million dollars since its inception ten years ago. That’s astounding. And wonderful. Thank you to all our Partners, Sponsors, nonprofit Board Directors, staff and volunteers — and each of our 7,578 donors. We did it, together.

The 2021 Campaign begins November 11.
