Monterey County Historical Society

Mission

The Monterey County Historical Society actively engages and inspires the people and communities of the California central coast through the promotion and celebration of historical research, collections curation and preservation, civic partnerships, and educational programming.

The Big Idea

Located on a five-acre campus in Salinas, the MCHS plays a crucial role in safeguarding and preserving historical artifacts, images, documents, and structures, making them accessible for research and public education.

How does your organization benefit Monterey County?

The MCHS's work encompasses several key areas, including maintaining extensive archival collections, preserving historic buildings, and offering educational programs and exhibits. Our primary facility, the Boronda Adobe History Center, features the José Eusebio Boronda Adobe, built in 1844 and considered the oldest residence in Salinas. Our campus also includes the Lagunita One Room Schoolhouse (1897), a World War II Bataan Monument, a Filipino Farm Labor Bunkhouse, and the Robert B. Johnston Archival Vault.

The Monterey County Historical Society continues to veritable improvements in all aspects of its operations and we are fortunate to have this institution preserving our regional history since 1933
