Camp SEA Lab, CSUMB

Mission

Camp SEA Lab offers experiences on the Monterey Peninsula that foster lifelong excitement, scientific understanding, and stewardship of our coasts and ocean by providing quality marine-oriented programs where Science Equals Adventure! The Friends of Camp SEA Lab provide general support as well as individual and class scholarships to promote participation by campers and classes who could not otherwise attend summer camp and outdoor school programs.

The Big Idea

Camp SEA Lab inspires youth to care for the world’s oceans and Monterey Bay by connecting them to the marine environment through hands-on learning, outdoor adventures, and self-reflection. The Friends of Camp SEA Lab provide general support as well as individual and class scholarships to promote participation by campers and classes who could not otherwise attend summer camp and outdoor school programs (many have had limited or no exposure to the ocean). They hope to keep their adventures financially sustainable, like taking campers kayaking—one of the highlights, often stretching students’ abilities and comfort zones, connecting them in a special way to the ocean and the organisms living there.

It is so important to me, as a lifelong Californian, for [my daughter] to have marine experiences, from swimming in the Pacific to tidepooling. Camp SEA Lab achieved that aim and so many others. Counselors were kind, knowledgeable, patient and compassionate. The camp experiences (like snorkeling, exploring the Carmel River and kayaking on Elkhorn Slough) were rewarding, memorable and challenging. I appreciate the variety of ecosystems that the kids were exposed to. The opportunities to experience marine life were priceless for my daughter. Organization was excellent and counselors were both professional and warm.
