Friends of the Pacific Grove Public Library

The Friends of the Pacific Grove Public Library help ensure that our library is a thriving community center for discovery and lifelong learning.

The Big Idea

Over 1,373 young readers and their families enjoyed 22 summer reading programs at the PG Library in 2018 - everything from music and bubble science to puppetry and storytimes. These fun summer reading activities have a very important purpose - to keep children and teens reading and stop the “summer slide” loss of reading ability when school is out.

The PG Library will be closed summer 2019 for a Library Renewal Project. While core services will be relocated, there won’t be room for summer reading programs usually attended by 100 or more young people and their families.

A traveling Summer Reading Program, in a different PG Park each week (from Jewell to Lover’s Point to George Washington to Topper Arnett, and more) is the Big Idea. Storytimes and programs in grassy spaces near playgrounds will encourage reading, outdoor play and exploration. Funding for promotion, performers, giveaway books, prizes and more will support summer reading in PG Parks in 2019.

“The Pacific Grove Library is my family’s happy place. I work weekends so my husband brings our kids on Saturday for books to read and movies to see. It helps get my kids ready for school, and saves us money. And the ladies there are so nice and have big smiles.”
