Mission

A community-based phased approach to improve public safety and protect natural resources while optimizing access and visitor experience to Highway 1 parklands, Carmel to Big Sur.

The Big Idea

As traffic continues to increase along Highway 1 from Carmel and into Big Sur, one nonprofit is focusing its Big Idea on parking and transportation solutions. ParkIT! strives to improve this corridor by developing designated parking areas for shuttles to pick up travelers and carry them to popular places like Point Lobos using a traffic-alleviating day-use reservation system. This initiative aims to reduce the strain on the natural and human environment caused by traffic congestion in this picturesque destination.

Since I live in the area and drive the Highway 1 corridor —I frequently see traffic jams, illegal U-turns, and people walking on the highway for long distances. ParkIT! was created to address these concerns. In 2018, nearly thirty initial listening sessions were conducted with the community--led by Ernest Chung- and a solution and steering committee were developed. In addition to providing steering committee representatives, plus financial or in-kind contributions, the following entities also provide connections and expertise in producing technical planning documents and fundraising proposals: Big Sur Land Trust, Point Lobos Foundation, Big Sur Marathon Foundation, Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District, and California State Parks. We hope you’ll join us! With the Carmel Area State Parks General Plan approved in 2021, the time to act is now.

We’re In This Together

Nonprofits are more important that ever in this trying time. Monterey County Gives! was created to support the local nonprofit community's Big Ideas (and programs). And thanks to your participation and generosity, Monterey County Gives! raised over $7.8 million for 162 local nonprofits in 2020.

MCGives! has now raised and contributed over $35 million dollars since its inception ten years ago. That’s astounding. And wonderful. Thank you to all our Partners, Sponsors, nonprofit Board Directors, staff and volunteers — and each of our 7,578 donors. We did it, together.

The 2021 Campaign begins November 11.
