The mission of the Salinas Valley Fair is to showcase the annual fair, promote the talent and education of citizens of all ages and provide a year-round setting for community service and celebration.
Each year, the Salinas Valley Fair invites local schools to participate in a free field trip to the fair on opening day. Organizers plan special events that are fun and educational for classrooms, including a 12,000 square foot STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) activity building, hands-on agricultural displays, crafts, entertainment and local exhibits of art made by students. The nonprofit’s Big Idea is to increase participation from schools in the Salinas Valley, all the way from San Ardo to Salinas, and to do so they plan to collaborate with local schools to provide transportation for students who otherwise would not be able to attend the fair.
Being an educator in the Salinas Valley, I see many benefits to our local students being able to attend the Salinas Valley Fair. For the past 30 years I have taken my class on a field trip there, and I find it to be very educational. We are not there for the rides, games and corndogs, but instead to visit and view the educational displays. Our learning doesn’t stop at the fair! We return to our classrooms to do writing assignments and activities centered on our visit. I know there are some students who do not get to go to the fair unless it is with their class on a field trip. For some families it is too costly, and going with their class on a field trip is the only opportunity they get to see what our Salinas Valley is all about.
