Education Foundation for MPUSD

To enhance the education of Monterey Peninsula Unified School District (MPUSD) students by building and sustaining community support.

The Big Idea

Seaside High School Dramatic Arts Program is a vibrant, dynamic, hands-on theater program being built from scratch in a low-income public school.

Working out of repurposed spaces on the Seaside High campus, SHSDA currently has no theater venue, nor an operating budget – but we’re working on it! Despite our modest beginnings, we have big plans in store for the future of this program as it’s built from the grassroots up. Our long-term goals include building or converting an old space into a permanent theater on the SHS campus. Community support has the potential to give us the foundation we need here on the ground, in order to reach the stars in the future: this year’s budget will purchase technical theater equipment like lighting and sound, a stock of props and costumes, and the performance rights to plays and musicals for our 2018 season. Other costs include transportation on field trips, tickets to theater performances, set-building supplies, painting supplies, and a library of books, plays, and theatrical resources.

My experience in drama club has been amazing. When I started the program I was just doing it to hang with my friends. Pretty soon I was going every day because I really enjoyed doing it and learning about it. I had to make a very big decision – to continue drama or move onto my favorite sport basketball instead. I was ready to join basketball, but I realized I wanted to stay in drama, overjoyed that I was going to do something I really liked. One of my favorite things that River taught me is, “the bigger you go the more fun you will have.” When I went over the top, I had so much fun and felt like I wasn’t Arminda, but my character. When I go to drama, it doesn’t feel like I’m with my friends – it feels as if I’m with my family doing what we enjoy.
